Vellarikka Kichadi/ Thayir Pachadi

Kichadi/ Pachadi is one of the important South Kerala dish in the Onam Sadhya Menu. Mainly Yogurt based vegetarian dish (along with Cucumber and Coconut), usually served as an accompaniment with warm rice . Also very delicious, healthy and very easy to make.

Ingredients:

Vellarikka/ Cucumber – 1 cup peeled, finely chopped

Yogurt  (beaten)- 3/4 cup

Salt to taste

Oil – 2 tsp

Mustard – 1/2 tsp

Dry red chilly -1

Curry leaves few

 

To grind:

Coconut – 1/2 cup

Green chillies – 2

Small onions – 2

Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp

Method:

Grind coconut, mustard seeds, small onions, green chillies with little yogurt into smooth paste. keep it aside.

Peel and cut vellarikka into fine cubes. Cook the pieces with enough water, salt & boil till the vellarikka pieces are cooked. Add the ground paste into vellarikka pieces. Cook on low flame for 3-4 minutes, to this add the remaining beaten yogurt & mix well. Check & adjust the salt accordingly… Remove from fire.

Heat a small pan with some oil, splutter mustard, dry red chillies , curry leaves. Pour over the Kichadi.
